Pink Slips
Black & White Charity Nite

After learning about the small fund raising team called CIKA, an auxiliary of the Royal Children’s Hospital and their efforts to support research into cancer in children, the Let’s Go Cruisin’ girls activated their Pink Slips social group into action. They decided they were overdue to host a social night out [they can be usually found doing Friday lunches] so why not make it in support of a great cause like the one the CIKA team devote their energies too.

A committee was formed within minutes led by Cheryl Hutson. Cheryl’s sister Pam DeKoff and long time friend Jan Morphett along with LGC members, Theresa Corn, Kerin Duyvestyn and Chris Newton started getting together to plan what become the Black & White Charity Dinner Dance. The date was set, the Headliners were booked, Benito’s Restaurant & function centre in Mornington provided the girls with a very good dinner deal, tickets were printed and sponsorship was canvassed. Tickets sold out very quickly and the support offered by local businesses and many individuals was almost overwhelming.

The night finally arrived and with over $10,000 in prizes on offer in the fund raising raffles. The function room was soon packed with the 143 people that managed to squeeze in. The major prize pool worth over $6000, required the purchase of a balloon as the ticket and a spinning wheel was also operating with another $4000 in prizes on offer.

Long time CIKA members Andrew & Christine Duyvestyn travelled from Hamilton to represent CIKA. Andrew gave the guests a brief overview of how CIKA came about and its most recent fund raising event, the Coach Drive from Port Fairy to Melbourne that raised over $50,000 to fund new research equipment at the Children’s Hospital.

After the band played several brackets, dinner had been served, tickets sold, wheel spun, it was time to draw the winning ‘balloons’. With more than a dozen major prizes and another 10 or so supplementary ones, it took some time to find winners for all on offer. Not that any one seemed to mind, especially those lucky on the night.

LGC treasurer Theresa Corn found a quiet place to tally up the night’s funds raised and then it was time to invite Andrew & Christine back to the stage to accept cheques on behalf of CIKA. It was with great pleasure that the Pink Slips were able to hand over a cheque for $9400 raised on the night. They were also able to pass over cash donations received prior to the night from a number of local businesses that bought the total up to $10,650.

Congratulations must go to all the many people that helped make this a very enjoyable and successful night. Our thanks must also go to all the sponsors that provided the prizes in support of the night’s fund raising and lastly to all those that came along and bought a balloon or two that enabled the excellent total to be passed to CIKA. We know that these funds will be put to very good use in the ongoing fight against cancer in children.

Resident LGC photographer Graeme Hutson roved around during the night so here's some happy snaps to enjoy.
